What is the skeletal pump?
The skeletal-muscle pump is a collection of skeletal muscles that aid the heart in the circulation of blood. It is especially important in increasing venous return to the heart, but may also play a role in arterial blood flow.
How does the skeletal muscle pump work?
Skeletal Muscle Pump Veins embedded within a muscle are compressed during contraction of that muscle, causing an increase in blood pressure due to the presence of one-way valves within the veins. This increase in pressure drives the blood towards the heart.

Flow decreases during the muscle’s contraction phase and increases during relaxation to provide an auxiliary “milking action” that moves blood through the muscles and propels it via the venous system back to the heart.
